Building Your Child’s Confidence through Martial Arts
Let us talk about the increase in confidence a child will get through doing Taekwondo. Taekwondo is a Korean word that translates to “The way of the hand and foot”. In essence, we train to use our hands and feet to kick or punch. Children gain confidence by learning to kick fast and accurately. They gain confidence when they learn to effectively use their hands to strike or disable an aggressor.
More importantly, the children start to understand that it takes hard work and lots of hours of practice to earn these skills. None of this comes overnight to anyone. As the children train and move up in rank they start to realize that they have spent countless numbers of hours on developing these skills and that is the root of where their confidence comes from. They realize that they have trained to learn to handle situations where they may be in harms way and that an aggressor probably hasn’t trained as hard or as diligently.
The beauty of the whole situation is that after these children gain these skills they hold their heads high and their shoulders back and this is a natural signal that “I am not a target”. This confidence also carries over into their daily lives. Children are less likely to hide when a teacher asks a question in class. They will look at people in the eyes and politely state their intent.
This is the AH HAH moment for any good martial arts teacher. This is what we work for with these kids and whether they stay in Taekwondo or any other martial arts we know that the confidence the children have developed will see them through many situations in their lives.
